Do not call it a plateau until the log proves it.

A bad workout can be stress, sleep, nutrition, timing, or normal variance. A plateau is a repeated failure to move a target after the relevant variables are tracked: load, reps, effort, weekly volume, adherence, and recovery.

01Stabilize the exercise

Keep the movement, setup, range of motion, and rep target consistent long enough to read the data.

02Check weekly volume

Look at hard sets for the lift and supporting muscle groups before assuming the program is broken.

03Adjust progression target

Move from load jumps to double progression, smaller increments, or rep targets when jumps become too large.

04Plan recovery

If multiple signals point to fatigue, use a deload or lower-stress week instead of forcing another max-effort attempt.

A deload is a progression tool when the data says fatigue is masking fitness.

Performance signal

Repeatedly missing normal reps at normal loads, especially across more than one movement pattern.

Effort signal

Sets that normally feel controlled start registering as near-limit work.

Consistency signal

The schedule keeps slipping because recovery cost is too high for the current block.
